Ten Years Ago

In a measure prompted by five prostitution arrests at local businesses the previous year, in January 2003 the City Council voted to approve an urgency ordinance placing a 180-day moratorium on giving permits to massage establishments. Among the illegal operations busted in 2002 was one set up in a building directly across the street from City Hall.

Twenty Years Ago

Having suffered the worst loss in its football program the previous October, with a 48-8 loss to Muir High School, La Cañada High dropped the Pasadena powerhouse from its pre-league play lineup. In January 1993, Spartan coach Nic Larez announced his team would instead play Alhambra High, saying, “We’re not capable of beating [Muir].”

Thirty Years Ago

Julie Hayek of La Cañada Flintridge was crowned Miss California USA at a pageant held in Oxnard. The 22-year-old, then a senior at UCLA, went on to capture the Miss USA 1983 title and was first runner-up in the Miss Universe contest that year.

Forty Years Ago

Two dozen residents of the Gould Canyon Wash area met with county and U.S. Forest Service representatives, in hopes of bringing a halt to traffic from motorcycles and mini-bikes along the bridle trail there. The homeowners were primarily objecting to the noise caused by the motorized vehicles on weekends and during after-school hours on weekdays.

Fifty Years Ago

Flintridge Preparatory School Mother’s Club sponsored a benefit at the Pasadena Playhouse, where Edward Everett Horton was starring in the French comedy, “Nina.” Proceeds raised during the event were earmarked for the construction of a swimming pool on the La Cañada campus.

Sixty Years Ago

The Valley Sun cover featured a photograph of the Nelson brothers, Jim, 10, and Jeff, 7, of 4600 Crown Ave. The two were standing on a mesa taking in a view of the growing town, where many homes were under construction. That was particularly the case in the early 1950s in their family’s neighborhood, developed under the name “La Cañada Oaks.”
