La Cañada residents concerned about vector control following an announcement that mosquito-borne West Nile virus was contracted by a Los Angeles County woman learned they would have to fend for themselves against mosquitoes on their private property. The city was not included in a county abatement district.

Twenty Years Ago

Friends of the La Cañada Flintridge Public Library reported that more than 9,000 books would be offered during their September 1992 book sale.

All proceeds, organizers said, would be donated to the library for essentials that had been threatened by county budget cuts.

Thirty Years Ago

A stand of 22 eucalyptus trees that lined Verdugo Boulevard across from Church of the Lighted Window, estimated to be a century old, was felled by a contractor grading the property for an 11-home development.

The city manager said the planning commission approved the development with the assumption the trees would be saved.

He ordered their replacement with the largest trees available. The following week it was reported that the felled trees would be replaced by deodars.

Forty Years Ago

Nearly 60 members of Young Voters for Action volunteered on a Saturday in September 1972 to go door-to-door in La Cañada on the hunt for unregistered Republicans so that they could register in time to vote for President Richard M. Nixon in his reelection bid.

Fifty Years Ago

A grand opening weekend featuring a formal dinner-dance on Saturday, followed by nine holes of golf on Sunday, was held at the new La Cañada Country Club on Godbey Drive. Bill Godbey was the developer and president of the club.

Sixty Years Ago

A memorial worship center including table, cross, candlesticks and an alter screen was dedicated in the new youth building at La Cañada Presbyterian Church.

The new center was made possible by gifts in memory of William W. Loewen, who had been a church elder.
