Crescenta Valley Sheriff's detectives recover 'perfect' 5-carat diamond

June 28, 2012

Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s detectives recovered a 5.11-carat diamond on Wednesday after it was stolen from a safe inside La Cañada Flintridge home, officials said.

Few details were released about the burglary due to an ongoing investigation, but Sheriff’s Sgt. Debra Herman said the diamond --- worth at least $600,000 --- was found in Los Angeles. Police followed up on tips and witness interviews, she added.

“It was found through good old-fashioned police work,” Herman said.

A suspect has been identified, but hasn’t been arrested because detectives are still tracking him down, she said.

In May a La Canada resident noticed the ring was no longer inside the safe in her home, Herman said.

The diamond was a family heirloom, so she said its’ recovery was even more meaningful for the owner.

“She was very grateful,” Herman said. “It was a heartfelt moment for everyone.”

The diamond is being safely stored at Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for now, she added.

“It is so beautiful,” Herman said. “It’s a perfect diamond.”
