I do love this warm spring weather we have been experiencing. In fact, it has been chamber-of-commerce perfect; a great advertisement for life in the foothills. The roses in my backyard are in full bloom and are sweetly fragrant. I especially like the happy bird songs I hear during the day but do, however, get slightly irritated when a particular mockingbird insists on warbling into the wee hours of the morning.

College kids are winding up their studies for the year and parents are trekking to wherever they are to collect their belongings and haul them back home again. Oh, I do remember those days.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Association once again held a greatly successful Bingo Barbecue.

More than 130 people, some dressed in Western chic, turned out to raise money for our city's 2013 float, “Dino-Soar,” a cute little dinosaur on roller skates. The rendering of that guy is adorable. I can hardly wait to see our float take shape and watch him soar on New Year's Day down Colorado Boulevard.

This fundraising event is always a fun evening and guests certainly enjoyed the Thursday Club's atmosphere while catching up on LCF news. Of course, raising money to build our float is the focus of the evening.

Sue Beatty and Corkie MacPherson co-chaired the event. The club's grand room was set with long tables covered in red-checkered cloths. Pots of bright red geraniums added to the colorful evening.

The chuck wagon vittles served up later in the evening included savory barbecued meats, corn bread and salad that was prepared by Simply Perfect Catering.

Taking over the reins as emcee for the night was Daryal Gant and his wrangler, Jim Geoghegan, who corralled all the bingo equipment.

Callers for the bingo games were Bob Craven, Brenda Gant, Pam Wiedenback, Tom Slaughter, Bill Imbriale, John Therrien, Arlene Buchmann and Chuck Terhune.

Among the bingo winners were Dorothy Hamilton, Margie Basignana, Barbara Arnold, Carol Cormaci, Sharlyn French, Sharon and Michael Vinceri, Carol Imbriale, Pam Wiedenbeck, Ginger Dennis, Liz Craven and Dick Anderson.

There were opportunity prizes galore, generously donated by local business. Pat Foltyn led the pack of winners that included Trish Diaz, Faye Therrien, Mary Gant, Dotty Greenawalt, Adene Misamore, Joe Thompson, Sharlyn French, Harriet Hughes, Florence Cox and Malak Peterman.

Ann Neilson, president of the association, thanks the merchants, businesses and friends of the LCF Tournament of Roses Assn. for their generous and continued support.
