Autistic teen honored for anti-bullying efforts

April 11, 2012

A La Cañada Flintridge teen received a Golden Goody Award this month for her charitable work. Dani Bowman, 17, who suffers from autism, received the award from the Goody Awards Guild for her work illustrating two anti-bullying books and for her illustrating and doing voice-over work for a new public service announcement for the group Rethinking Autism.

FOR THE RECORD: An earlier version of this story misstated the name of the award.

Bowman, who did not speak until she was nearly 6, has launched an illustration company, Powerlight Studios, and teaches animation to other autistic children. “As a person with autism, I think it’s important to stand up against bullying for those in the autism community, spread positive awareness of autism and inspire others with autism to follow their own dreams,” Bowman said in a statement.
