Pigs fly as La Cañada's float debuts

January 02, 2012

A cluster of volunteers in white jumpsuits huddled around the La Cañada Flintridge float, "If Pigs Could Fly," in the minutes before the parade inched up Orange Grove Boulevard.

"This group, as much as they'd hate to say it - is a family," float driver Pamela Weidenbeck said, as others ribbed her.

Weidenbeck said her thought before getting behind the wheel of the float each year is, "Lord, don't let me (mess) up."

Before float construction chief James Herrington could answer a question about the most challenging aspect of making the float, his colleagues jumed in: "Getting up before 10 a.m."

Herrington said it was a challenge to integrate everyone's ideas in the float, in which porcine aviators in flight gear lift their plane into the air.
