Brenton G. Jones, then the manager of the La Cañada Shopping Bag market (where Sprouts is going in today) was awakened at his La Crescenta home by a Placerville man who forced Jones to accompany him to the store to open the safe. Montrose Sheriff’s deputies, having been alerted by Jones’ young son, arrived at the store before the manager finished unlocking the door. The suspect, who took off on foot down Chevy Chase Drive, burst into a home there and demanded the keys to their car. When that family couldn’t find them quickly enough, he headed to a gas station, where deputies caught up with him.
