Two men, one holding a sawed-off shotgun, held up 11 people in the Smith Produce Store then on Foothill Boulevard at Hill Street, taking an estimated $4,220 in cash and jewelry. It was the second armed robbery at the location within an 8-week period. The suspects escaped in a car that had several other occupants.

In the wake of the property tax bill mailings of late October 1971, more than 800 La Cañada property owners attended a protest meeting at Lanterman Auditorium. They had seen a 69% increase in their property taxes over a five-year period.
