The president of the La Cañada Unified School District, Barbara Racklin, announced she was withdrawing from the November 2001 school board election. Her decision dropped the field to five candidates for three open seats.

A two-year attempt by then-City Councilman Chris Valente to have the city adopt a gray-water ordinance fell short on a 4-1 vote of the council. Mayor Jack Hastings said very few La Cañada residents would be interested in a program that called for the reuse of gray water for outside irrigation because the idea was “not popular.”
Thirty Years Ago
A flash fire started by steel wool being rubbed on a wood wall that had been soaked with paint stripper destroyed the top floor of the La Cañada Professional Building at 1433 Foothill Boulevard. Losses were estimated to be about $200,000.
