Ten Years Ago

After several months of consideration, the board of directors of La Cañada’s community center decided to hold onto its formal name, the Roger Barkley Community Center, reported Timothy Gosney, then president of the board. The facility, long known to locals as The Youth House, had been named for the radio personality and philanthropist after his 1997 death. Today it is known as the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge.

A former employee of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory filed suit in September 2001 against the lab and two individuals, saying he was laid off for blowing the whistle on cost overruns and mismanagement on a $175 million project.

Thirty Years Ago

David Dickau, a graduate of USC who also held a master’s degree in conducting from Northwestern University, was introduced as the new music minister of La Cañada Presbyterian Church.

La Cañadan Stan Midgley was set to open the 1971-72 Kiwanis Travelogue program with a film he shot in British Columbia. Midgley made his living by shooting locales each summer and presenting his films before audiences during the other seasons of the year.

Fifty Years Ago

The elementary schools in La Cañada during the first week of the 1961-62 school year were offering the following entrees: frankfurters on Monday, chopped meat and gravy over fluffy mashed potatoes on Tuesday, spaghetti with meat sauce on Wednesday, hamburgers on Thursday and baked fish fillets on Friday.

Sixty Years Ago

The La Cañada Thursday Club announced it would hold a debutante ball, a first for the community, on Dec. 27, 1951. This major social event, called Bal Blanc de Noel, was scheduled to be held at Oakmont Country Club.
