New happenings under the Sun's umbrella

August 03, 2011|By Carol Cormaci

Perhaps you’ve heard the word on the street, or seen our recent advertisements to this effect: Times Community News tomorrow launches the Pasadena Sun, a weekly newspaper that will shine new light on the cities of Pasadena, South Pasadena and San Marino. It will publish every Friday, directly on the heels of the La Cañada Valley Sun’s Thursday publication.

This is quite a venture and it has brought new life to our office on Foothill Boulevard in recent weeks, as Pasadena Sun City Editor Bill Kisliuk and his staff of reporters moved into desks here and began the heady task of getting to know their reporting beats and planning their first issues under the guidance of Editor Dan Evans, who oversees the new effort as well as the Valley Sun, Glendale News-Press and Burbank Leader.

There’s nothing quite like being involved in community journalism. There is a true satisfaction in letting your neighbors know what’s going on in town. After spending some time in the company of this new staff, I can safely report to you that I believe the Pasadena Sun team is dedicated to doing just that.

I’m also very pleased with the fresh look our venerable paper is gaining during this transition and I hope you’ll share my enthusiasm for everything from the new logo to the headers at the top of our various sections.

But wait! There’s more! On Sunday, the Pasadena Sun and the La Cañada Valley Sun will combine forces to publish the Sunday Valley Sun. This edition will be delivered inside the Los Angeles Times every Sunday to Times subscribers in the areas served by the two Suns.

This means that La Cañada Flintridge residents who take the Times will be seeing print coverage of their city twice a week — a big departure from the 65-year history of a single Valley Sun publication each week.

Our readers who do not go to the Internet (www.lacanadaonline.com) for daily updates but prefer to read La Cañada’s news in print won’t have quite such a long wait now, as important breaking news and early weekend high school sports results will be printed in the Sunday Valley Sun.
