Ten Years Ago
A field of 144 golfers teed up for the 15th annual Roger Barkley Charity Golf Tournament, held at Brookside Golf Course in the spring of 2001. The event, named for the late radio broadcaster who was a La Cañada Flintridge resident, had raised about $1 million over its run.

Twenty Years Ago
Remodeling work started on a former Ralphs market in the 2100 block of Foothill Boulevard to get it ready for its new tenant, a Ross Dress for Less store.

Thirty Years Ago
A memorial service was held at Church of the Lighted Window for Frank Lanterman, a former member of the state Assembly and one of La Cañada’s pioneer Lanterman family, who died at the age of 79. Among those attending to pay him tribute was then-Assembly Speaker Willie Brown.

Forty Years Ago
A 6-year-old La Cañada boy, Kyle McIntyre, was credited with saving the life of his 4-year-old cousin, who was floundering in the deep end of the McIntyre family pool. The younger boy had been chasing a frog that hopped into the water to escape his clutches. Kyle quickly pulled his cousin to safety before any of the adults present realized what had happened.

Fifty Years Ago
Preliminary sketches for a new chapel for St. George’s Episcopal Church were unveiled during a dinner meeting that the congregation held at the La Cañada Youth House. The church, then less than three years old, was holding its Sunday services at Oak Grove School and had, in August 1960, purchased property on Foothill Boulevard near Commonwealth Avenue on which the chapel would be built.

Sixty Years Ago
In May 1951 the Regional Planning Commission spokesman said the commission soon would hold a hearing to decide whether or not La Cañada’s Foothill Boulevard business district east of Oakwood Avenue should be rezoned from residential to commercial. The matter had been tabled by commissioners the year before, but was being reconsidered because there were two new members on the panel.
