The La Cañada school board voted to survey the community to find out if voters within La Cañada Unified School District boundaries would support an $18 million bond and a $250 parcel tax to facilitate the reopening of Foothill Intermediate School on Cornishon Avenue for use as a middle-school campus.

The La Cañada Flintridge City Council approved the continuation of the city’s coyote trapping program while at the same time urging residents to do their part by covering tightly all garbage containers to discourage the animals from visiting residential areas. The trapping program cost $3,000 annually.

More than 400 La Cañada youths donated their time to work the “Foothill Boulevard Blitz” on the afternoon of April 22, 1971 for a major clean-up drive sponsored by the local committee of Keep America Beautiful. The volunteers picked up litter along Foothill from Ocean View Boulevard to Hampton Road.

Film producer and director Larry Lansburgh of La Cañada won an Academy Award for his feature documentary, “The Horse with the Flying Tail.” The movie featured a palomino horse named Nautical who won the team gold medal at the 1959 Pan American Games.
