Thirty Years Ago
Services were held at St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church in La Cañada for aviation pioneer Jack Northrop, who died at Verdugo Hills Hospital at the age of 85. Northrop, a creative aircraft designer, was also co-founder of several well-known aviation companies, among them Lockheed and Northrop Corp. Northrop was living at the Encinas Drive home of his son and daughter-in-law at the time of his death.

A gunman wearing sunglasses held up the See’s Candy shop in La Cañada and got away with all the money in the cash drawer: $20.
Fifty Years Ago
The La Cañada Teachers Association recommended that the school board adopt a $5,000 annual salary for new hires in the soon-to-be-launched La Cañada Unified School District. At the time the recommendation was made, the beginning teacher wage was $4,720 annually.
Sixty Years Ago
The La Cañada branch of the County of Los Angeles Public Library system was given a new home when a modern structure was opened at 4510 La Cañada Boulevard on a lot roughly northwest of where the See’s Candy store operates today. The library had to be replaced several years later when the 210 Freeway was constructed and the tunnel built.
