The 15-member La Cañada Flintridge Foothill Master Plan advisory committee agreed at its first session in February 1991 that traffic along Foothill Boulevard should be slowed and that the main thoroughfare should be made pedestrian-friendly.

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy marked its 50th anniversary with a “Golden Gala” dinner-dance.

Forty Years Ago

The Rev. Roger K. Prescott was installed as minister at Lutheran Church in the Foothills. Prescott came from a six-year ministry in Salt Lake City.

Fifty Years Ago

Charles Pate, one of the pioneer settlers of La Cañada who arrived here in 1893, died at the age of 87 after breaking his pelvis during a fall at his Hillard Avenue home. Pate was once employed as an apricot picker by Dr. Jacob Lanterman, one of the principal landowners in the early days of the community.

Lamenting the lack of community support for new neighborhood schools in residential areas, the Valley Sun took a tongue-in-cheek look at other options and commissioned a local artist to draw them. One suggestion: “The Suburban,” with the entire school being built underneath the floor of this valley. Students could “enter unobtrusively through a manhole and never be heard from the rest of the day,” the paper’s editor quipped.
