Ten Years Ago: Nearly 60 years after being captured by Japanese forces at the beginning of World War II and held as a prisoner of war for four years, longtime La Cañada resident Garth Dunn was awarded the Purple Heart during a special ceremony held at the Federal Building in Westwood. Dunn credited his U.S. Marine Corps training for his survival.
Twenty Years Ago: With California in its fourth consecutive year of drought, La Cañadans were told they faced a mandatory cut in water usage beginning Feb. 1, 1991.
Thirty Years Ago: Between 800 and 1,000 local residences in neighborhoods near Jessen Drive found themselves without power early one Saturday morning in January 1980 after vandals broke open a locked box mounted on a utility pole. The vandals flipped a switch that caused an explosion and a small grass fire at the base of the power pole.
