The La Cañada boys' basketball team had a fine opening game Monday at the 53rd Arroyo Invitational Varsity Basketball Tournament, defeating La Puente, 61-50, at Arroyo High.
Matt Faber had 14 rebounds and Michael McGlashan had 11 points — including five-of-six shooting and three three-pointers in the fourth quarter — to pace the Spartans.
Dario CiVon had 10 points in the first quarter to get the Spartans rolling. La Cañada had a 59-35 lead in the fourth quarter.
The Spartans will play Montclair — which won the Jurupa Valley Tip-Off Classic Friday — in the second round on Wednesday.
Hughes helps team capture title
Allie Hughes of La Cañada, a junior at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire, helped the girls' varsity field hockey team win the New England Championship (Class C).
Seventh-seeded Brewster Academy defeated No. 1-seeded Newton Country Day of the Sacred Heart, 3-1, in the finals.
In the semifinals, Brewster Academy defeated third-seeded Holderness School, 2-1, and the Bobcats beat second-seeded Ethel Walker School, 2-0, in the quarterfinals.
Brewster Academy finished the season 12-4-2, and the Bobcats captured the championship for the first time since 2004. The team also captured the Lakes Region League championship this year.
Hughes also is a member of the ice hockey and crew teams.
