June 02, 2010

Bits and pieces from the local sports scene:

Elsenbach, White named to play in all-star game: Burroughs High girls' basketball standouts Lisha Elsenbach and Layana White of Bellarmine-Jefferson are the lone area players invited to take part in an upcoming all-star game.

The locals will play in the 2010 War on the Floor/Future Stars Game at 4 p.m. June 12 at L.A. Pierce College.

The game will feature a group of talented players who will be seniors in the fall.

Last season, Elsenbach helped lead Burroughs to the playoffs. A first-team all-league selection and a second-team All-Area pick, she averaged 15.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.6 steals a game.

White helped the Guards capture a Santa Cruz League championship and advance to the CIF Southern Section semifinals. A first-team all-league honoree, she averaged 12.6 points and 4.1 steals a game.

The athletes will both play for the East squad, which will be going up against the West squad. Also on the East team is Melanie Minas from Crescenta Valley.

Both Elsenbach and White should be key players for their respective teams during their senior seasons in the winter.

Group compete in premier track meets: A trio of former Burroughs High track and field distance runners competed on the national collegiate stage last weekend.
