Relegated to a wild-card berth to start the postseason, the La Cañada boys’ tennis team had a tough road ahead of it if it hoped to have a deep playoff run.

However, the Spartans’ depth has helped them thrive in the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs.

La Cañada, which finished third in the Rio Hondo League, has beaten two league champions to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.

The Spartans (17-6) hosted Palm Desert in a quarterfinal contest Wednesday. Results weren’t available at press time.

La Cañada earned a spot in the quarters by defeating Beverly Hills, 10-8, Friday in a second-round match at home. The Normans won the Ocean League championship.

The Spartans were also able to beat Chadwick, the Prep League champion, 11-7, May 12 at the Peninsula Racquet Club.

Against Beverly Hills, the teams were tied at 8 with two sets remaining. The doubles team of Matt Faber and Leeho Lim staved off multiple set points to earn a hard-fought 7-5 win. Singles player Joshua Lim also battled to win the final set of the contest, 7-6.

Singles player Aidan Lynch won two sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, and Kim was able to sweep his other two sets by 6-1 scores.

Against Chadwick, the Spartans received a solid effort in doubles from Trent Jones and Grayson Frazier, who swept, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0.

Faber and Lim also contributed, winning two of three, 6-4, 6-1, 1-6.

The singles all won two each, as Lynch went 0-6, 6-3, 6-0, Greg Lee went 2-6, 6-0, 6-0, and Kim went 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

La Cañada opened CIF on May 11 with a 12-6 wild-card win against Anaheim Canyon.
