Time encapsulated

Members of a local Brownie troop look at their lives nine years ago.

Nine years after burying a time capsule, members of La Cañada Flintridge Brownie Troop 37 gathered Friday to unseal old memories and a few odd trinkets tucked away for posterity’s sake.

Present were eight of the 12 original troop members (and a handful of mothers), including Casey Forgey, Kelsey Walker, Riley Kessler, Kristen Hernandez, Carolyn Hotchkin, Kira Ramani, Sarah Franklin and Shannon Denney. Absent troop members included Ragini Sahai, Morgan Miller, Callen Chung-Wolf and Elizabeth Weinberger.

In spring 2001, Troop 37 assembled a time capsule, each girl filling a small plastic tub with photos, newspaper clippings and small toys. The capsule was then hidden away in the garage of the Hernandez family.

There was plenty of laughter and reminiscing Friday as the girls (now college-bound) dug through the contents of the capsule.

Among the most novel items were a pink ballet slipper and a certificate of eligibility for the Junior Olympics. The girls also read from a questionnaire they had completed detailing where they hoped to attend college (USC and Stanford were the most common choices) and who their favorite entertainment artist was (Britney Spears).

“We always talked about how way off into the future before they graduated we would open the time capsule,” said troop mom Kathy Hernandez. “I can’t believe this day is here.”
