Ten Years Ago: The Jet Propulsion Laboratory announced its director, Edward Stone, would be retiring when he reached 65 in January 2001. Stone had directed the facility, with its billion dollar budget and 5,000 employees since 1991, during which heavy NASA budget cuts had called for “faster, better, cheaper” projects.
Twenty Years Ago: The first phase of a three-year master plan to improve Descanso Gardens got underway with the creation of a new lake west of the Rose Garden, where two existing ponds would be allowed to merge. The work included the creation of an island to serve as a bird refuge.
Thirty Years Ago: New energy-saving lights were installed on the La Cañada High School varsity baseball diamond.
Forty Years Ago: Franchise Realty Interstate Corp. applied for a zone exception to establish a McDonald’s restaurant on a lot in the center of La Cañada’s business district, next door to where Taylor’s Steakhouse is today. The La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce voted 9 to 2 to oppose the project.
