JPL’s open house is Saturday, Sunday

“Worlds Beyond” is the theme of this year’s open house event at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission and parking are free.

One item on display will be the JPL-built Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2, retrieved from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope last year by astronauts and on loan from the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum.


JPL is located at 4800 Oak Grove Drive, La Cañada. All visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as no buses will be provided from JPL parking lots. JPL will provide vans for mobility-challenged guests.

Vehicles entering the property are subject to inspection. Banned are weapons, explosives, incendiary devices, dangerous instruments, alcohol, illegal drugs, pets, skates, skateboards, Segways and bicycles. No bags, backpacks or ice chests are allowed, but small purses and diaper bags are allowed.

HomeGoods to raise funds for cancer

Customers at the HomeGoods store in La Cañada Flintridge can buy cards for $1 between today and June 5 that can be personalized and displayed in the store as part of the 10th annual “Help Families Fight Cancer” campaign.

All proceeds will go to the Jimmy Fund, which supports cancer research and care at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

Two agencies partner to offer summer camp

The Child Educational Center and Descanso Gardens are jointly offering summer camp for children entering grades two through six, it was announced this week.

The camp, broken into three weekly sessions, will be held at the botanical gardens in La Cañada. Cost is $400 a week. To learn more, contact Allegra Inganni at (818) 354-3418 or
