Choirs to perform May 20

May 13, 2010

The five choirs in the La Cañada High School Choral Music Department each received high marks for their performances at various West Coast music festivals over the past several weeks and are now gearing up for their final concert of the year.

“Festival season is officially over. Eight performances later, I’m exhausted yet satisfied with the choirs’ progress and success,” said Music Director Jeff Brookey.

The Chamber Singers’ performance at the Southern California Vocal Assn. Festival in Baldwin Park on March 30 was given a “superior” rating. A month earlier, at the Pacific Lutheran University Invitational Choral Festival in Tacoma, Wash., they were considered the strongest choir of the day.

At a festival in Valencia on March 16, the Concert Choir received a “superior” rating, and the Men’s Ensemble walked away with an “excellent” rating.

At the Music in the Parks Competition in Santa Clara on April 17, the Concert Choir was again rated “superior” and placed first in its division.

The 7/8 Women’s Chorus took part in a festival in Santa Monica on April 23, receiving a “superior” rating. The Women’s Ensemble participated in the nonrated Cal Poly University Festival on March 18, and then received an “excellent” rating at the Southern California Vocal Assn. Festival in Baldwin Park on March 30.

The choirs are preparing all new music for their final concert, which will be May 20 at the La Cañada High Auditorium. This year’s theme is “Anything Goes,” and the show will feature all five ensembles singing popular music, as well as a number of soloists and smaller groups. There will be two performances of this special concert. The first show is at 6 p.m., and the second, mainly for parents and friends of students who are seniors, is at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Elementary school children are admitted for free, as are donors who hold family passes. For more information, contact Sue Wright at wrightsue@sbcglobal.net or visit www.lchsmusic.org.
