The Valley Line:

Bingo Barbecue comes up roses

May 06, 2010|By Jane Napier Neely

A good time was had by all at the recent La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Assn. Bingo Barbecue. This party, which raises funds for the building of our Rose Parade float, has always been a popular event, and this year marked the 28th year that people came to show their support for our float.

This year’s float is called “3-2-1 DIG!” and fits perfectly for the theme of the 2011 New Year’s Day Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, “Building Dreams, Friendships and Memories.”

More than 140 eager bingo fans showed up at the La Cañada Thursday Club building to join in on the fun. Many of the guests were dressed in Western wear as they gathered around the tables covered with red and white checked cloths.

The event was chaired by Sue Beatty and Claire Slaughter. Bob Wallace accepted the honors of master of ceremonies. Jim Geoghegan was the man in charge of the bingo.

The prize table was loaded with enticingly wrapped gift baskets for bingo winners as well as those who held winning raffle tickets. A silent-auction table saw a flurry of activity as guests were happy to outbid one another for great gifts.

Enthusiastic callers of the bingo games included Peggy Hotaling, David Granish, Tom Slaughter, Dave Spence, Mary Gant, Otis Hutchins and Pat Anderson.

Bingo prize winners were Lee Johnson, Steve Brown, Micki De Villa, Carol Imbriale, June Beemer, Adele Hillyer, David Moffett, Otis Hutchins, Jim Carbonetti, Martha Gindorf, Karen Hess, Joe Thompson, Lynn Thompson, Millie Powell, Peggy Touchstone Phillips, Merv Johnson and Mary Gant. Two couples (the Johnsons and the Thompsons) individually won four bingo games.

The 16 raffle prizes went to Rose Manning, Nancy Freeman, Dotty Greenawalt, Joey Mitchell, Diane Stibal, Dave Mitchell, Pat Anderson, Olivia Brown, Claire Slaughter, Denise Greenawalt, Jean Zink, Mary Hennessy, Ruth Lyle, Howard Backer and Karen Hess.

In addition, some 35 azalea plants of all colors that were donated by Nuccio’s Nurseries and Chuck Hughes were awarded as door prizes.

When the dinner bell clanged, there was a rush to the chuck wagon. Guests dined on barbecued baby-back ribs and chicken. R & J Pit Barbecue fixed the vittles.
