The Valley Line:

Easter provides a fair shake

April 08, 2010|By Jane Napier Neely

I was up in Palo Alto for a wonderfully fun family Easter gathering at daughter Heather’s house this past weekend. It took some well-timed maneuvers for the Easter Bunny to hide eggs between rain showers. However, the rain spatters didn’t seem to deter our exuberant little kids from ferreting out the hiding places of the brightly colored eggs. The littlest cousin of the family is 18-month-old Finn Fagan, who got plenty of adult help filling up his first Easter basket.

It wasn’t until 10 p.m. Sunday that we heard that the Southland had gone through some rocking and rolling at 3:40 in the afternoon. I hope all is well with everyone.

I have a couple of local events to chatter about this week, so here goes: The La Cañada Thursday Club took members and guests back to the 1970s and visions of San Francisco’s famous Haight Ashbury district at their annual fundraising fashion show, “Flower Power 2010: Peace. Love, Fashion.”

Nearly 200 members and guests met at the Oakmont Country Club where they enjoyed bidding on fabulous silent-auction items and buying opportunity tickets for designer handbags. The highlight of the day came with club members modeling spring and summer fashions shown by Holiday Hats and Gowns in Montrose.

Proceeds from this event support the club’s ongoing activities and philanthropic projects within the community, including its generous scholarship program.

Guests first gathered into small groups for refreshments, conversation and then were seated at tables centered with flowers and sprinkled with tokens of that flower-child era — peace symbols and multi-hued foam flower cutouts.

Once everyone found their places, Judith Cooper, club president, welcomed members and their guests. She also recognized the benefit committee and thanked them for their creative work.

Heading up the benefit committee was Brenda Brisbois. She was assisted by silent auction chair Gail Merchant, and by Susan Boyd, who coordinated the fashions with Karla Baer Cohen and Lillian O’Connor from Holiday Hats and Gowns.

Jeanie Kay, who has a lively sense of humor, served as the show’s emcee. Noli Caswell coordinated the models and shared emcee duties with Jeanie.
