LC Cougars baseball win NIT Championship
After 11 hours of baseball in one day and six games over a long weekend, the La Cañada Cougars 12-and-under travel baseball team stole a first-place victory in the President’s Day NIT Championship at Big League Dreams in Chino Hills.
The Cougars followed up losing two of their first three with an early-morning win on Monday over the Bakersfield Crusaders, 7-2. The Cougars were led in batting and pitching by Kenny Barrera, who tripled twice, and by Gonzo Rios, who scored all three times he came up to bat.
The Cougars came out on top in their next game, a 9-8 win against the Chino Hills Cobras, to head to the championship game.
The championship game featured the San Diego-based California Lookouts against the Cougars. La Cañada scored first with three runs in the first two innings, followed by the Lookouts tying the score, 6-6, in the fifth.
With two outs and Osa Adler at bat in the sixth inning, Coach Ricardo Barrera had an idea to send Greg Albano stealing. Albano stole second, third and home for the go-ahead run.
Gordon Ingebritson held the Cobras on the mound and won the championship.
