FSHA’s Academic Decathlon team takes 1st place in Div. 2

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy’s academic decathlon team took first place in Div. 2 after winning 40 medals in the Southern California Private School competition at Bishop Alemany High School on Jan. 31 and Feb. 6.

The Tologs placed second in the SuperQuiz segment of the competition in Div. 2.

The girls on the team, who traveled to Paris over Thanksgiving break to broaden their studies of this year’s decathlon theme of the French Revolution, competed against 35 teams from over 25 schools.

“The most exciting thing was watching the girls get called up for their medals and then being hugged by the entire team when they returned to their seats,” said FSHA decathlon coach Mario Pariante.

FSHA senior medalists include Yasmin Al-Quaddoomi, who won gold medals in art, interview and essay, and a silver medal in language and literature; Nicole Fossier, who won gold medals in language and literature, and economics and speech, and silver medals in science, music, math and interview, and a bronze medal in art; Erin Gonzalez, who won gold medals in language and literature, and art; and Mallory Howe, who won a gold medal in interview, a silver medal in art and a bronze medal in math.

FSHA juniors medalists include Laura Allen, who won a gold medal in interview and a bronze medal in music; Charlotte Hook, who won silver medals in art, math and speech, and a bronze medal in music; Vanessa Romero, who won a gold medal in math; Rachel Saad, who won gold medals in SuperQuiz, and language and literature, a silver medal in economics, and bronze medals in science, speech and art; Mimi Spindle, who won gold medals in language and literature, art, SuperQuiz and economics, and a silver medal in essay; and Kathryn O’ Sullivan, who won a silver medal in SuperQuiz, and bronze medals in language and literature, science, music and economics.

LCHS finishes 18th in Los Angeles County Academic Decathlon

La Cañada High School finished 18th in the Los Angeles County Academic Decathlon, a two-day competition of intellectual might that took place on Jan. 20 at El Rancho High School in Pico Rivera and Feb. 6 at the USC Galen Center.

The first day of competition including prepared and impromptu speeches, interviews and an essay competition.
