Residents evacuate in advance of storm

February 09, 2010|By Jason Wells

Hundreds of foothill residents have evacuated their homes ahead of a rain storm that is expected to bring more than an inch of rain to already soaked hillsides.

With critical catch basins still full from heavy rains this past weekend, authorities ordered hundreds of residents in La Crescenta, La Cañada Flintridge and Acton to evacuate by 10 a.m. today.

Mud and debris overran several debris catch basins this past weekend, severely damaging 43 homes in La Cañada and dozens of parked cars.

A list of addresses under mandatory evacuation orders have been listed on the Los Angeles County Public Works website as sheriff’s deputies comb through affected neighborhoods to warn residents.

Authorities said evacuation centers would be set up at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 2411 Montrose Ave., and the Acton Community Center at 3748 Nickels Ave. in Acton.

Glendale officials this morning issued a notice warning residents in the northern annex portion of the city to be prepared to evacuate. On Monday, city officials asked residents to move their vehicles off the street curbs to minimize the impact of potential mudflows.

City officials would monitor the situation closely and reevaluate the possibility of evacuation orders later today, Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz said.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for the foothill areas from noon through tonight, with forecasters warning that thunderstorm conditions could bring heavy bands of rain and even some hail in isolated areas.

The storm could bring up to an inch and a half of rain, according to weather service.
