In Theory:

Racial profiling for security’s sake?

From a religious perspective, there is much to gain by appreciating that we can have a role in emergency responses through prayerful support. Those formulating regulations, those who may perpetrate crimes against this and other nations, those who are potential victims, those who may be unintentionally affected or implicated, and even the masses of bystanders, are all governed by God’s spiritual laws, in which his love is always in operation. No one is left out of this love, and it is present everywhere, at all times.

Looking at the deep, spiritual significance of man created by God, as his image and likeness, and blessed by him (see Genesis 1), we see that apparent governmental impositions do not change this relationship.

To the degree that we realize this, we contribute to better government decisions and to the standing of our nation, and can anticipate a progressive disappearance of motives for terrorism, along with improved long-term security.

Mary Baker Eddy wrote in “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures”: “The great miracle, to human sense, is divine Love [God], and the grand necessity of existence is to gain the true idea of what constitutes the kingdom on heaven in man. This goal is never reached while we hate our neighbor.”

The seeming impositions — and there will be plenty brought down through the years — are only as substantial as we decide; but we can go beyond them to realize the good that is truly ours through God’s unending love, and thereby find increased wisdom unfolding in our governments.

As we read in the book of Job: “Thou shalt be secure, because there is hope thou shalt take thy rest in safety.”

There is much for each of us to do, and we can do it.--GRAHAM BOTHWELL is first reader at First Church of Christ, Scientist, in La Canada. Reach him at (818) 790-3493.
