In light of the attempted Christmas Day terrorist bombing, the United States government has imposed additional scrutiny on people traveling from 14 countries considered “security risks” — 13 of which are Muslim countries. Arsalan Iftikhar, legal fellow for the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding calls this a “clear use of ethnic, racial and religious profiling.” What do you think? Do you agree or disagree with Iftikhar? And if this is racial profiling, does it achieve greater security in the long term for our country?
The Rev. Jeri Linn: Peace, safety and security in traveling to and from the United States is of primary importance.
Safety comes before the chance of risking “ethnic, racial and religious profiling.”
As a spiritual leader, I suggest that we first turn to prayer and meditation treatments to get at the cause of this issue of protecting all citizens from acts of terrorism.
The spiritual opposites of anger, violence and terrorist acts are: peace, love, wisdom and the divine law of justice. God’s laws are higher than the laws of men. Divine law is eternal, it is creative cause. Let us affirm that we are all guided with spiritual wisdom in taking any security steps that are necessary to thwart terrorist acts. Let us affirm divine justice in bringing all those with ill intent to meet the consequences of their actions.
