CCY Dragons get eighth Cerritos

Almost thirty Crescenta-Cañada YMCA Dragon swimmers attended the recent Winter Age Group meet held in Cerritos. The event pulled together qualifying swimmers from more than forty teams in California. Key performances from the Dragons placed them eighth overall with respect to combined team scores.

Yvette Kim, age 10, led the charge in individual events with five top three finishes including first place finishes in the 100 free (1 minute, 01.25 seconds) and 50-foot freestyle (28.39 seconds). Iva Icheva swam a blistering 25.29 in the 50 free in the 13-14 age category to earn third place overall; this puts her just short of an elite Y-National time in this event. She also earned second place in the 100 free preliminaries, with a 55.29, to come in sixth in the finals. A top three finish was also posted by Andrew Angeles, 16, with a time of 2:19.30 in the 200 breaststroke.

Harrison Thai shined in the 13-14 boys category. After posting several top three times in prelims —including a first in the 200 free, a second in the 500 free and a third in the 100 backstroke—Thai swam to a second place finish in the 200 breaststroke and third place in the 200 fly in the finals. Thai’s performance helped clinch him a spot on the 2010 Pacific Coast All-Star Team. One of only eight Southern California boys at his age level to be selected, Thai and his team mates will be swimming against All-Stars from all over the West Coast.

Thai was also a major contributor to an outstanding 13-14 relay team which included Josh Lo, Kyle Otazu and Bruce Park, who earned second place in the 200 free relay, third place in the 200 medley relay and fourth place in both the 400 free and 400 medley relay. A boys 11-12 team made up of Samuel Jo, Eric Park, Kevin Park and Kris Abramyan also did well, posting top eight finishes in all of their events.
