Two hikers in Angeles National Forest found a skull on Dec. 24 at 2:30 p.m. and reported it to the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station. The skull was found with a hole that looked to be from a bullet, said Dep. Rick Pedroza of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Upon further investigation a second set of human remains was found on Dec. 26. The second skull had apparent trauma.
“As of [Wednesday], there are no new developments,” said Steve Whitmore, spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Dept. “The [Los Angeles County] Coroner’s office is on it. They’re trying to figure out the race, gender and identity of the two victims, what happened and if the two are related. Homicide is waiting for the coroner’s answers.”
The remains, which were found within the Station fire burn area, were in a burned condition.
Whitmore added that it’s “possible” the remains were found because of the Station fire burning some of the chaparral and brush. Whether or not that means more bodies will be found, Whitmore doesn’t know.
“That’s the open-ended question,” Whitmore said. “Rural areas like Angeles National Forest have a history. The fire may have opened [Angeles National Forest] to more of this.”
Power outage strikes area briefly
A power outage hit 2,208 homes in La Cañada and La Crescenta for less than an hour Wednesday morning.
Authorities with Los Angeles County Fire Station and Southern California Edison said strong winds blew a palm frond into a circuit, causing the brief outage.
“At 9:17 a.m., Edison workers were doing a routine switching procedure on a circuit,” said Southern California Edison spokesperson David Ford. “A palm frond knocked out a circuit, but all was restored by 9:50 p.m.”
The Sheriff’s Station was using a generator during the outage
“It affected us too,” said Sgt. Gloria Young of the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station “Everyone is safe though and we had no traffic accidents.”
