La Cañada Gladiators 25, Rosemead Rebels 12
Once again, the Jr. Pee Wee Gladiators showed that they are truly one of the elite teams in the league by defeating the Rosemead Rebels 25-12 before a raucous festival crowd on Oct. 31 at La Cañada High School. Solid offense and defense lead the day for the Gladiators.
The offense thrived with the running back team of Brandon Sharman, Thomas Stea, Mario Martinez and Daivon Grayson. Martinez jump started the offense with a 65-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter. Quarterback Brett Gangi hooked up with Michael Doud for a 40-yard reception setting up a short touchdown run by Augy Saucedo. Another Doud reception set up a Gangi keeper for a score to cap off the scoring for the Gladiators. The offensive line controlled the battle with Robert Rothrock, Danny Pardo, Eli Fazzi, Anthony Guerrero, Ethan DeMoulian, Able Fernandez, Jack Rappard, Jason Chang and Jason Rowton in front.
The special teams were very special as Daivon Grayson continues to impress with a kickoff return he took all the way to the big house for a momentum changing score. Daivon would then recover an on-sides kick to eliminate any chance for the Rebels to come back. Brian Erickson tackled the Rebels returner two times as the first man down the field.
The defense excelled with a score saving tackle from behind by Brandon Sharman followed up by a dominant sack by John Monroe to shut down the Rebels on the 5-yard line. Later in the game, Mario stripped the ball near the goal line setting up a fumble recovery by Angel Salazar. The corners were locked down with Drew Sarceda and Anthony Saravia on the edge. The defensive line frustrated the Rebels with savvy play from Theo Chamberlain, Thomas Stea, Mason Gilmour, Jason Rowton, John Monroe and Max Burcher. Monroe and Rowton were a two-man wrecking crew, both recording three tackles for losses. “I’m proud of this team’s tenacity, practice effort and punctuality,” said Gladiators Head Coach Jason Sarceda. “It’s what we do during the week that shows up on Saturdays.
