Spartans crush Monrovia

October 19, 2009|By Seth Amitin

La Cañada boys’ water polo is on a hot streak as they beat Monrovia 17-1 on Monday, their fourth straight victory in Rio Hondo league play.

La Cañada (6-17, 4-0 in league) has beaten the other three teams of the Rio Hondo, including a 11-10 overtime win against South Pasadena.

The Spartans scored nine unanswered goals in the second half.

“This was one of the better games they’ve played [this season],” said Spartans Head Coach German Lopez. “They were being aggressive, they were pushing the [counter-attack]. We haven’t done that against South Pasadena or Temple City.”

Junior Justin Lee led the Spartans with five goals and Christian Renfro added four. Sophomore Chase Borisoff, younger brother to Spencer and Devon Borisoff, who were both All-Area Water Polo Players of the Year, had three goals. And sophomore Bo Mattix had two goals.

Goalkeeper Aria Mahboubi had nine saves. Reed Shankwiler filled in for him in the second half with two saves.

La Cañada beat Temple City on Oct. 15. Temple City made it to the semifinals last year in the CIF playoffs — same as the Spartans. But unlike the Spartans, they returned all of their players for this year, making them the easy preseason pick for the Rio Hondo league title.

La Cañada will play at Temple City on Nov. 3 in what may decide the Rio Hondo league championship.

The Spartans have had a brutal out of conference schedule, going 2-17 in non-league games. That continues on Tuesday as the Spartans travel to El Toro, who are ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division I.
