Campus resounds with its choral program

September 24, 2009

According to Jeff Brookey, who is enjoying his second year as the director of the La Cañada High School Choral Department, the choir program will continue its “rich tradition of excellence” with four performances during the year, all open to the public.

The annual Debut Fall Concert will be on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. at Lanterman Auditorium, 4491 Cornishon Ave.

The concert will feature all choirs singing an impressive variety of music, including works by A. Scarlatti, J.S. Bach, J. Massenet, Eric Whitacre, and even a pop hit from Coldplay.

Also on the program are African-American spirituals and folk songs from various parts of the world, such as Ireland, Korea and Haiti.

The ensembles at the school include Men’s (seventh-12th grade) and Women’s ensembles, which are non-auditioned choirs. Members of the Concert Choir and Chamber Singers are selected through audition. This year, the newly-established 7/8 Women’s Ensemble will perform at all high school concerts.

All courses teach proper singing technique, choral performance practices, musicianship skills, choral literature from all eras and styles, and help students progress in their musical proficiency and appreciation. In addition to a rigorous rehearsal and performance schedule, Brookey has announced additional noteworthy events. Nineteen LCHS Choral students will be auditioning for the Southern California Honor Choir on Oct 3.

Both the Chamber Singers as well as the Concert Choir will attend intensive choral retreats later this year. Most of the choirs will participate in tours that allow them to observe and compete with other high school choral groups.

The Choral Parents Association (CPA) is organizing several fundraisers to support items not covered by the school’s budget, such as sheet music, auditorium rental, choir tours, professional workshops, and part of the accompanist’s fee. First up: A rummage sale to be held at the high school on Saturday, Oct. 3, starting at 8 a.m. For further information about upcoming events, visit the LCHS Choral website at http://www.lchsmusic.org or contact Anne Tryba, (818) 952-0429.
