First Spartan football games canceled

September 04, 2009|By Seth Amitin

La Cañada High varsity, junior varsity and freshman football teams have had their first games of the season canceled as air quality continues to impact team practices.

The California Interscholastic Federation requires a certain number of practices in football before games can be played for the safety of the students. Due to poor air quality resulting from the Station fire that has been sweeping through the Angeles National Forest for more than a week, La Cañada wasn’t able to meet that quota.

“Week 1 football games vs. Alhambra [scheduled for Sept. 10 and 11] have been canceled due to the fires and poor air quality,” said Athletic Director Tamar Hill in an e-mail Friday afternoon. “All LCHS athletic teams have been restricted from all physical activity both indoors and out.”

Only the football program has been affected as of this weekend, according to Hill. The Alhambra games will not be rescheduled, she said.

“The LC staff is very concerned about the safety and well-being of our student athletes as well as following CIF rules,” Hill said.
