County renews sheriff’s contract

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved a new agreement to provide contract police services to 40 small cities through the sheriff’s department.

The existing contract was extended for three months through Sept. 1, to allow for resolution of a liability agreement between the county and the contract cities association.

The county will receive some $198 million from the cities from September to June to provide the services, with about $2 million budgeted for this fiscal year by the city of La Cañada Flintridge. Other cities under similar contracts include Bradbury, Duarte and Rosemead, among others.

The sheriff’s department provides first line law enforcement services to 2.9 million residents, 1.9 million in cities ranging in population from 700 to 175,000.

The contract will extend through June 30, 2014, with annual cost of living adjustments.
