Alex Battison:

Compassion for people

Compassion for people and animals makes this week’s La Cañada Valley Sun All Star a standout in the community.

Alex Battison, 15, was nominated as an All-Star by staff at Flintridge Riding Club, where she has been involved in equestrian activities for the past six years.

“Alex has a great connection to animals and is very thoughtful to her horse,” said Snowden Clarke, a trainer at Flintridge Riding Club.

The youth also is thoughtful when it comes to two-legged creatures, he said, adding, “She has a very good attitude and is encouraging to all of the other students.”

Battison is the daughter of Bill and Beth Battison. She was born in Manhattan Beach, where she lived for three years, until she moved with her parents to La Cañada.

She attended Mayfield Junior School in Pasadena for kindergarten through third-grade and transferred to Westridge School for Girls for fourth-grade. She is currently a sophomore at Westridge School for Girls.

She has always loved animals, especially horses, she said, adding, “Growing up in La Cañada, there are so many horses, how can you not love them?”

When she was 9 years old, her parents granted her longtime wish and allowed her to pursue her passion for horses. She now has a chestnut-colored, Canadian warm blood named Doppler and actively rides English-style in competitions and other events.

Sailing also captured the youth’s enthusiasm and she spends time, when she can, sailing with her family in a 42-foot boat and in smaller, 15-foot boats with friends, she said.

In addition to those activities, she is involved in Assisteens, the youth charity work of Assistance League of La Cañada Flintridge.

She has enjoyed several activities with that group, including making goody bags for underprivileged children and providing blankets for residents at a women’s shelter.

Battison also enjoys her studies and has an avid interest in science. Although she hasn’t narrowed that interest yet, she said, she is considering several options in that field for a future career.

Clarke said Battison works diligently at every task and is a good student.

“Alex is very conscientious,” he said, adding, “And, she’s a real pleasure to work with.”
