How important it is to exercise discernment in our entertainment choices.

Listening constantly for the Christ-message to motivate our thinking can benefit everything we undertake, and help others, too.

Movies are expressions of popular culture and present day art. This source of entertainment can also be a natural way to trigger conversations about life, values and beliefs. A family movie night can be more than pleasurable entertainment. Movies offer a range of opportunities to think about life issues and hone critical thinking skills. The first alternative recommendation is not about movie choices but about an alternative way for families to have meaningful conversations, using movies as a means to that end.

In Islam, the value of critical thinking is a cherished principle of faith. “Behold in the creation of heavens and the alteration of night and day, there are indeed signs for people who think.” (Quran 3:190)

Movies can be helpful in fostering critical thinking skills by triggering meaningful discussions about such profound issues as ethics, spirituality and social justice.

As for alternative movie choices, while American made movies are quite entertaining, foreign films offer a way to understand other cultures and people.

For those interested in quality movies from the Muslim world, the Levantine Cultural Center based in Los Angeles is an excellent resource for finding information on movies made in the Middle East.

For example, the third annual Noor film festival that took place this past weekend in Beverly Hills showcased the work of Iranian film makers. One of the films shown is the highly acclaimed film directed by Iranian-American Justin Mashouf, “The Warring Factions,” which portrays his personal journey to Iran as he meets with family and bonds with a group of Iranians his age.

Another alternative to the summer blockbusters for adults is the 2009 Academy Award best picture film “Slumdog Millionaire.”

This British film was also honored in the 18th annual Muslim Public Affairs Council Media Awards for its complex and nuanced portrayal of Indian Muslim characters that persevere in this love story despite enormous difficulty.
