Jack Lantz Big Band, Concert Choir perform

March 19, 2009

La Cañada Presbyterian

The church presents the La Cañada Presbyterian Concert Choir and the Jack Lantz Big Band directed by Tony Chunn at 4 p.m. on March 22 in the sanctuary.

The Concert Choir and the Jack Lantz Big Band come together to perform Duke Ellington’s “Sacred Concert.”

Other artists performing include tap dancer Channing Cook Holmes and sloists Lori Stinson and Susan Kay Wyatt.

Ellington’s inspiration for sacred music concerts began during the civil rights movement of the 1960s. The first sacred concert took place in Grace Cathedral in San Francisco in 1965. The cathedral commissioned the work as part of its yearlong consecration celebration, and Ellington’s star-studded orchestra performed it with a massed choir.

The second Sacred Concert took place in 1968 at the Cathedral of St. John in New York and St. Mark’s Cathedral in New Canaan, CT.

The third and final concert was premiered on Oct. 24, 1973, in London’s Westminster Abbey, just seven months before Duke Ellington passed away.

Admission to the concert is free, and a free-will offering will be accepted.

La Cañada Presbyterian Church is at 626 Foothill Blvd. in La Cañada
