Civility by Diana Olson:

Shorts that enhance you

July 31, 2008

There are several types of shorts: Short shorts-- high on the thigh; regular shorts -- mid thigh; Bermuda or walking shorts-- lower on the thigh or just above the knee. Current fashion trends show cargo shorts, denim shorts, Bermuda shorts, hot pants (from the 1970s), and skorts. They use to be worn just for the gym, beach, or ultra casual events. Today, shorts can be accessorized for dressy events. Pizzazz can be added with a metallic halter top, silk blouse, cropped blazer, platform pumps, flats, shoe boots, jewelry, or a cardigan. One of the latest trends are wool-cuffed shorts that can be worn with dark tights, bright shoes and a long cardigan cinched at the waist with a belt. Long chains and dangling earrings complete the look. Show caution when wearing shorts because where the hem of the shorts end, the eye are drawn to that part of the body. Slimmer hips, thighs and tummy look better with longer shorts or pants. Women with short slim legs often can do well in shorts because their legs look longer.

•?Short shorts should really be saved until you are near your goal weight. They are not flattering for heavy legs or tummy.

•?Regular shorts are good for those who are slightly overweight with short legs. Styling must be simple, and looser at the leg.

•?Bermuda or walking shorts are cut fuller and longer. There is enough fullness to conceal heavy thighs. This longer length slims. Cullotes are fuller skirt-like shorts. They are great to wear with low-heeled simple shoes. Golf skirts, called skorts, are flattering for fuller hips and thighs. The walking shorts are good with a pleated front, espadrilles with no socks, and lighter colors. Skintone-colored shoes are flattering and make the leg look longer.

Correct colors keyed to the eyes, skin tones, and hair direct attention toward the face and away from figure challenges. Experiment with different styles, cuts, and manufacturers. Check slacks and shorts in a mirror from all views; make sure that the fit is comfortable, and that the fullness is at the fullest part of the hips. Invest in shorter shorts for dressy occasions, and longer shorts for casual events. This is a new trend. If you can wear them, enjoy!
