In addition, SITV will be thanking the outgoing board of directors and welcoming the incoming 2008 - 2009 Board of Directors. The Women’s Opportunity Awards program provides cash grants to women who must obtain additional job training or education to realize their goal of economic independence. This program helps women enter or return to the work force in order to support themselves and their families.
Soroptimist is also concerned with the special challenges facing today’s girls and young women. The organization launched the Violet Richardson Award program in 2000 as a way to recognize young women ages 14-17 engaged in volunteer action within their communities and schools whose volunteer efforts include: helping other disadvantaged girls; fighting drugs, crime and violence; cleaning up the environment; and working to end discrimination and poverty. The program is named after Violet Richardson Ward, the first president of the first Soroptimist club. Richardson Ward was committed to creating opportunities for girls and young women through her affiliations with Soroptimist, the Girl Scout Council and the American Association of University for Women.
SITV will also be awarding this years’ Breast Cancer grant applicants. Recipients are women who are or have been continuously battling breast cancer along with other breast cancer related matters, i.e. breast cancer screenings or post-surgery care. The breast cancer recipients are chosen by the club committee to assist with the costs not covered by insurance such as child care, transportation, rent and other related expenses.
