If La Cañada defended and rebounded like this all season, they would cruise to a state championship.

Stephanie Anderson led the Spartans with 17 points, 18 rebounds and seven blocks, while Leeza Sanfilippo added 16 points and eight rebounds to lead La Cañada (11-9, 2-2) to a 42-26 home victory over San Marino (11-9, 2-2).

On defense, the Spartans limited San Marino to just five points on two field-goals and one free-throw in the first half.

“It was really a team effort on defense,” said Spartan head coach Tamar Hill. “We did not give them a lot of second chance opportunities.”

After scoring its fifth point on the first possession of the second quarter, the Titans would not score again until the first minute of the third quarter, when Laura Oshiro ended a 14-0 Spartan run with a three-point basket.

Anderson was a factor on both sides of the court, blocking or altering shots on defense, while sparking the offense on offense.

“I told her she needed to be aggressive and establish her position, and she did just that,” said Hill. “You can’t ignore her when she is on the floor playing big.”

Thanks to Anderson listening to her coach, she sparked the Spartans’ second quarter run, blocking three shots in the quarter and scoring four points to give La Cañada a 21-5 lead at halftime. She added seven more points in the third quarter to help the Spartans outscore the Titans 20-4 from the start of the second quarter to the midway point of the third quarter.

Both teams played evenly the rest of the way, as the Spartans and Titans scored 21 points apiece in the second half.

Nicole Chan led San Marino with 14 points.

The Spartans ended a two-game losing streak with the victory, while the Titans’ two-game winning streak came to an end.
