The La Cañada Gladiator Cardinal team had a very successful homecoming game against the venerable Glendale Bears on Sunday morning. Showing off a competent cadre of offensive weapons, the Gladiators moved the ball quite effectively against the Bears. Quarterbacks Noah Kim and Andrew Van Ginkel passed the ball well, connecting with receivers Will McConnell, Bobby Gazmarian, Kudzai Kachingwe and Myles Webb. Kachingwe also played quarterback, completing a long touchdown pass to Kim. Will McConnell came up big with a fourth-down catch from the Gladiator’s 15-yard line, and finished the game with a pair of touchdowns. Kachingwe and Webb each scored a touchdown. None of this would have been possible without the outstanding line play of Julian Martinez, Kyle Ramirez, Ian Goodstein, Connor McGoldrick, Jake George, Miles Haxton, Henry Alvarez, Collin Saydah, Jared Bourgault, Carson Okland, Tom McConnell and Dylan McGoldrick.

The Gladiators played tough defense, and kept the speedy Bears at bay the entire game. The high point of the game was a goal-line stand from the Gladiators’ one-yard line. The entire game was marked with enthusiastic play from both sides, providing a fantastic showing of competitive sportsmanship. These boys have much to be proud of. Players of the Game were receiver Myles Webb and showcase blocker Carson Okland.

The Gold team started things off bright-and-early against the visiting Glendale Bears. There was a lot of energy and you could tell this was going to be an exciting game. Leading the offense was quarterback Jason Rowton, who received some great blocking from Theo Chamerlain, Tyler Breneman, Drake Taylor, Ethan De La Cruz, William Stewart III and Michael Doud. Showing great skills in the backfield were Aidan Carlisle, Mitchell Espinosa and Elijah Washington, who ran for two offensive touchdowns.

Defensively, middle linebacker Naar Sahakian led the Gladiators. Cornerbacks Brandon Lang, Garrett Creedon and Daylen McWhorter shut down a lot of plays from the Bears. Digging in at the line of scrimmage were Ronald Shin, Luke and Jack Schwaiger, Walker Creedon and Peter Saliamonas, who put pressure on the Bears quarterback all morning.

The Gladiators will be on the road next Sunday to face the Montebello Indians.
