Excitement is building and committee members are preparing for the Third Annual 2nd Lt. Andrew Torres Memorial Golf Tournament to be held next Monday, July 9, at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club.

Torres, who grew up in La Cañada Flintridge, attended Flintridge Prep and graduated from Annapolis, lost his fight with cancer in 2004 at the age of 23. He asked his parents to help raise funds to fight cancer. Funds raised from the tournament go directly to Huntington Medical Research Institutes, known for their groundbreaking cancer research.

"There are still openings for a few foursomes or singles," said Don La Marr, committee member. "Come on out and join us in the fight against cancer while having a great time with some wonderful people. You don't have to be a great golfer to come out and have a good time for a great cause.

"This year's event will feature a hole-in-one prize automobile, once again sponsored by Chrysler and Star Chrysler Jeep of Glendale," said La Marr. "This year golfers will try to win a brand new Chrysler Sebring convertible. Star Chrysler Jeep will have cars on site to test drive as well and will donate $5 for each person who test drives an automobile."

This year the United States Marines will have a presence at the tournament in honor of Torres. An authentic M-1042 Humvee will be located at the front of the clubhouse for photo opportunities with Marines who are donating their time to the tournament. Later the vehicle will be placed on the course to honor Torres and to provide inspiration to golfers as they play.

Non-golfers can participate by attending the dinner following golf.

"Last year we had a full house," said Anita Brenner Torres, Andrew's mother. "If you don't golf, you can still come to the dinner only and enjoy the event so be sure to call and make a reservation.

"In addition to a wonderful dinner, there are some great silent and live auction items," continued Brenner Torres. "Items up for bid include tickets to sporting events, sports equipment, a Baja trip, box seats at the Hollywood Bowl, a helicopter ride with members of the LA County Sheriff's Aero Bureau, a VIP tour and tasting at the Eberle Winery in Paso Robles, jewelry and much, much more. And, don't forget that hole-in-one chance for golfers to win a convertible Chrysler Sebring."
