Congressman Introduces Bill to Name Post Office After Local Soldier

On Monday, Congressman Ken Calvert (R-Corona) introduced H.R. 988, a bill that would name a Riverside post office the Lieutenant Todd Jason Bryant Post Office.

Bryant, a product of the La Cañada public school system, was killed a little more than three years ago while on active duty in Iraq. His family lives in Riverside.

"It is an honor to introduce this bill in memory of Lieutenant Todd Bryant," stated Rep. Calvert. "Todd was one of those rare individuals who distinguished himself at every stage of life. I was proud to nominate Todd to West Point and later to have him on my staff as an intern."

Bryant was born on Jan. 14, 1980, in Long Beach. He came from a military family and his desire and determination to join the military was resolute. He enlisted in the Army Reserve and completed Basic Training at Fort Sill, Okla., before his senior year of high school. Calvert appointed Bryant to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point from which he graduated in June 2002.

After graduation, Bryant attended the Armor Officer's Basic Course at Fort Knox, Ken., graduating in December 2002. He reported to Fort Riley, Kan. in January 2003, and was initially assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st, Battalion 34th Armor Regiment where he served as an Assistant Operations Officer.

In April of 2003, he was reassigned to C Company, 1-34 AR where he assumed duties as Platoon Leader, 3rd Platoon. On Aug. 30, 2003, Bryant married Jenifer Reardon in Pennsylvania, nine days before shipping out with his unit in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. On Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, Todd was killed by an explosive device as his Humvee traveled on a road between Fallujah and Baghdad. He was 23 years old.

"I've often think about Todd. I consider it a great honor to have known him and to have watched him accomplish so much in his short but vibrant life," stated Rep. Calvert. "This Post Office is one way to remember Todd and to honor his family who gave the greatest of sacrifices for our country."
