Canseco Checks Out West Coast Boot Camp

February 15, 2007

Baseball big-name and author Jose Canseco stopped by La Cañada's West Coast Boot Camp last Friday to investigate the popular local fitness program. He stayed long enough to chat with instructors and pose for a few photos before heading back to work on a filming project.

"Jose is a cousin of a client," explained Boot Camp owner and instructor Adrian Pietrariu. "So he came in to check it out."

La Cañada resident Frank Frias, cousin to Canseco, had been raving about his experience with Boot Camp and convinced Canseco to learn more about the program. Boot Camp is a six-week outdoor work out class that encourages healthy eating and physical fitness. The techniques are based on military work outs and performance on physical training tests.

Frias has been very pleased with the program, Pietrariu said, citing his recent weight loss as a direct effect of the intense work out routine.

"You can get to see some big results," said Pietrariu. "The Cansecos are Cuban so they are some big guys."

Canseco wrote "Juiced," the biographical saga of steroids and Major League Baseball, one year ago. The book stirred additional controversy around the use of performance-enhancing drugs in professional sports around the time Barry Bonds was under investigation for steroid use.

Canseco has not yet committed to any of Boot Camp's fitness programs, but reportedly hopes to join for either the La Cañada or Glendale location programs upon finishing a current project.
