Eight Reasons to Shed Extra Pounds in 2007

December 28, 2006

Losing weight continues to be one of the most popular New Year's resolutions, which is not surprising given that more than 66 percent of Americans are considered overweight or obese. The physicians at Arroyo Seco Medical Group, with offices in Arcadia, Pasadena and Glendale, are encouraging resolution-makers to post these eight reasons why it's important to lose the excess weight in a place where they see it every day.

  • Reduce the risk of certain cancers — Excess weight has been shown to increase the risk of developing breast cancer, uterine cancer, esophageal cancer, colon cancer and kidney cancer, among others. "Obesity is one of the risk factors for cancer that is highly preventable," said Dr. Salwa Farag.

  • Decrease the chance of developing heart disease — Excess weight, especially fat around the middle of the body, puts extra strain on the heart and can lead to clogged arteries. These contribute to heart attack and other diseases affecting the heart.

  • Lower blood pressure — High blood pressure puts people at risk for heart attacks and strokes, and being overweight contributes to high blood pressure.

  • Reduce the risk of developing diabetes — Maintaining a healthy weight not only reduces the chances of developing diabetes, it can actually reverse type 2 diabetes.

  • Feel better and gain confidence — Losing weight helps people feel better overall because it increases stamina, improves the way they feel about themselves and helps them feel like they have greater control over their bodies.

  • Alleviate joint pressure — Extra weight puts unnecessary pressure on knees, hips, back and foot joints.

  • Reduce or eliminate urinary incontinence — Excess weight puts added pressure on the bladder, which contributes to urinary incontinence.

  • Lengthen life span — Better health means a longer and more satisfying life.
