Along the Scouting Trails

October 19, 2006

New Eagle Scout Daniel Chung Lee was born on Sept. 7, 1989, in Los Angeles to his loving mother, Sung Lee, and father, Chang Yon Lee. Daniel transferred to Troop 509 from a Los Angeles Troop when he was in the sixth grade. In Troop 509 he has served as a patrol leader, troop guide and a troop instructor. His memorable outings with the Troop include Philmont, Cherry Valley and yearly snowboarding trips. The scouting activities he loves include rifle shooting, archery and fishing. He is interested in sports but was only able to play one year of high school football during his sophomore year. He also loves to snowboard, surf, swim, fish and play basketball, football and hang out with his friends. He loves to kick back and relax, but he has little time for that. He is currently a senior at South Pasadena High School and is getting ready for college.

Daniel's Eagle Rank Leadership Service Project was to clean and re-paint about 40 trash cans at the Arroyo Seco Recreational Park in South Pasadena. The sanding of the trashcans took longer than expected but the priming and repainting went smoothly. The stench of the trashcans was unbelievable and face masks came in handy. The right number of people showed up and the project finished right on schedule.

One of Daniel's other passions is teaching children. At the church of Oriental Mission Church (OMC), he is very involved in the church program of AWANA (Approved Workmen are Not Ashamed), a program which gives children from kindergarten through high school a chance to learn more about the word of God. They memorize Bible verses, praise in worship time and have fun. Daniel's passion for teaching comes from when he was little and he always looked up to and admired the AWANA teachers as well as other school teachers. He wants to provide that same good role model for the kids today. In the AWANA program he has gone to Russia with a mission team to spread the program to the churches in Partisanski and Vladivostok. He also did a mission to Oregon to spread the program there as well. Daniel's advice to the younger Scouts is "Don't quit, it's worth it."

Michael Yong Lee, who has also achieved the rank of eagle scout, was born on Dec. 27, 1988, in Los Angeles. He began his Scouting career in second grade in the Cub Scout den of Pack 512 at La Cañada Elementary School.
