LC Elementary's PTA President Offers Back-to School Message

August 31, 2006|By Kaitzer Puglia

In preparation for the upcoming school year, I am awed by the historical importance of La Canada Elementary School.

Although the physical location of the current school is only 37 years old, the school itself has a 120-plus year history.

The school currently has two reminders of its historical beginnings. One is the school bell, which dates back almost as long as the school's historical foundation, and the second is a 10-foot-high painting of the district's first teacher, Helen Haskell Thomas.

La Canada Elementary School has been a beginning point of education for thousands of children and will continue to do the same for thousands more in the future.

Along the same historical avenue, I found that the charter for the PTA in our area goes back to the 1920s. The volunteers back then began a support system for this institution that continues strongly to today. Think about the volunteer support of this institution, combined with the great academic preparation LCE provides and we can see that the potential of our children is boundless. I thank all those pioneers who built such a great foundation for our own children's success.

To continue in these positive steps, I look forward to serving the LCE PTA as its president in this upcoming academic year.

My vision is one of service and support, and I include in my team a group of parents who are committed to the same vision and bring a wealth of personal and professional preparation to see that the needs of the students, teachers and families at LCE is met.

Serving this year on the executive committee are Laura Liang, Cathy Woolf, Marianne Newcombe, Joy Smith, Sonja Bradley, Emilie Larcher, Lisa Macho, Mayra del Valle, Rita Baranian, Madeline Lee, Diana Bromley and Sharon Otsuka.

Along with these individuals, we have hundreds of parents ready to "conduct the business of the PTA" in order to ensure a fun, productive, successful and supportive year for LCE.

Some of the programs the PTA organizes and maintains are Apples for Teachers, Art Museum, the Science Docents, Cool Tools Character Development, Library Gift Club, Multicultural Days, PTA Reflections, Red Ribbon Week, Spanish, and so much more.
